Living Room Redo

November 18, 2010

A few months ago, I was inspired by this photo from Tristan Auer's portfolio:

I saved it in my inspiration folder and kept going back to it every time I was trying to figure out what to do with the empty space above our fireplace so over the weekend, my boyfriend and I put our thinking caps on and made this happen:

And I hate it :(

I'm not sure if it's because our new mantel isn't installed yet or if it's because I chose mirrors that have a white frame around them instead of a black one like Tristan's. Or maybe it's because it reminds me of those houses in the 80's with the mirrored walls or because two more mirrors could fit above the 5 already there but we'd need scaffolding to put them up. Whatever it is, I don't love it so it's coming down and the painting we have in our bedroom is going in its place like so:

At 3.5 feet wide x 5 feet high, the painting is HUGE so it will help fill up a lot of the empty space on our 18 foot high walls. It will also bring some other colors into the living room which will be nice since I'm desperately trying to get out of the red, black and white color rut I've been stuck in.

I've already moved the faux cowhide rug from the man cave into the living room so once the painting is hung above the fireplace, our new mantel is installed and our walls are painted, I'm hoping our living room will end up looking something like this:

I already have all of the furniture so I'd just need to buy two new lamps (I'm returning the existing ones and getting these), a few new throw pillows and some other miscellaneous accessories and the new and improved living room will be complete!

What do you think of the upcoming changes?

  1. try to put paper over the glass and paint the outside red! i think that accent would be great! i dont see the picture pulling the room together it doesnt seem to fit... although a great picture

  2. I could try painting them but I still don't think I'd like them, unfortunately. It's just one of those things that bothers me every time I walk into the room and I can't put my finger on why :(

We're going to hang the picture sometime this weekend and see how it looks. It has a lot of color in it so I can add different accents into the room instead of just black, white and red one like I've been using so we'll see! Fingers crossed it all looks good when it's done :)

  3. Hello Caitlin!
Thanks for visiting my blog--I'm new at it, but it's been keeping me sane since we have moved here to Arizona. Haha! And I'm definitely loving it so far.

This post made me laugh because I happened to LOVE the mirror display...and then I saw the "I hate it" remark. Girl, you've got an eye...keep it up! I'll definitely be checking back to see what new things you have been DIYing:) Ciao!

  6. Kristen - Your blog is great and I'm happy it's keeping you sane haha People either love or hate the mirrors and I'm still on the fence so we'll see what happens!

Nattie - Thanks, I love the print too :)

Tina - The mirrors are growing on me so I might leave them up for a little while longer and see how they look with our new mantel before making a final decision. Thanks for commenting :)
