Bedroom Nook

May 31, 2011

I haven't posted a tour of my master bedroom yet because of this random nook it has that I don't know what to do with :(

The nook is about 5.5 feet wide x 7 feet long and the ceilings are just over 6 feet high but they open up to 18 feet high where my bed/dressers are. Also, there are three doors that occupy part of the area: the entrance (to the left), one leading to the master bathroom (straight ahead) and one leading into the walk-in closet (to the right).

The photo below is what the room looks like when you're standing diagonally in the entrance towards the bed. I'll be replacing those two black ottomans at the end of the bed with a long bench very soon.

This is the view from the master bathroom (closet door on the left), facing the bed/dressers:

I was thinking of putting a chair against the wall below and using the garden stool (my latest HomeGoods find!) as a side table to create a reading area but I don't read and it might be a little weird to have a spot dedicated to something I don't do:

Maybe I could hang some shelves above the stool (and possible future chair) since I already have a piece of art on the opposite wall?

I thought of hanging a large mirror on the wall above but I already have four mirrors hanging above my dresser (scroll back to photo 3 to see what I'm talking about) so that idea is out.

Maybe a simple bookcase (like an IKEA Lack or Expedit) could be used as a divider to split the nook and the bedroom into two spaces, kind of like the not-to-scale mock up below:

What do you think? Does this little nook have potential?

Doggy Bank

May 26, 2011

Another ceramic animal has been added to my ongoing collection! Meet my new doggy bank, a surprise gift from my mom:

Which looks very similar to my real dog, Sally:

I still haven't found a spot for the bank yet although I'm thinking it'd fit in perfectly on my dining room built-ins, what do you think?

Dining Room Ceiling Medallion

May 25, 2011

Confession: I have a bad habit of buying things for "projects" I'd like to do but then never actually get around to completing them until months later. Case in point: I had purchased a ceiling medallion for my dining room in the beginning of the year but only got around to putting it up a few weeks ago.

I don't have a very good before picture because, well A) I was excited to finally get the medallion up and B) my boyfriend started the project before I got home. However, I was able to dig up this old photo from sometime around Halloween (apologies for the horrible lighting).

I don't know if you've spotted it or not but there's some of the original builder beige paint showing towards the base of the pendant lamp. Why? Well, right after I moved in, I painted the tray ceiling yellow. Like school bus yellow. I didn't get a sample, I just saw the swatch in the store and bought a gallon of paint. It was awful so I re-painted it charcoal, which made the ceiling look like a black hole at night. Don't ask haha

After living with the black hole for a few months, I finally decided to paint the ceiling a bold color, hence the red. However, when I re-painted the it for the 3rd time, I just taped off the pendant lamp instead of taking it down and when I removed the tape, it peeled off that little chunk of paint. Cue the ceiling medallion :)

After taking everything down, we were left with this:

I didn't take any pictures of the wiring process because the power was off, it was hot and I was in a hurry to get things done. The wiring was pretty basic though, we just matched the black wires to one another and did the same with the white ones and then ground (grounded?) everything. We didn't screw the medallion into the ceiling since the pendant's base was smaller than the opening of the medallion, therefore allowing the medallion to rest on the base.

Once everything was up and the power was back on, things were looking much better!

I love how the medallion adds a little something special to the ceiling and I wish I would have put it up sooner because every time I walk into the dining room I catch myself looking up at it and smiling :)

Owl Mail Holder

May 18, 2011

It's no secret that I'm a sucker for white ceramics (especially of the animal variety) so when I saw this white owl at Ross for $6.99, I knew it was coming home with me.

The tag said it was a vase but I thought it'd be more practical as a mail holder :) Agree?

What's something you own that was intended to be used as one thing but you're using it as another?

 Do any dishes
 Clean the countertops
 Clean the stovetop
