What did you guys do to celebrate? My boyfriend and I went to dinner with my mom and then came home to rearrange some furniture and play with our dogs. We're boring, what can I say? ;)
Anyway, since the New Year brings about all sorts of New Year's resolutions, I thought I'd share the ones I have for my house since the ones I have for myself are like every one else's -- lose weight, get in shape, get out of debt, etc.
So yeah, about my house. I plan on bringing it in 2013 since our house still looks like we just moved in and the lack of progress (and furniture) is starting to get to me. Being paralyzed by fear and indecision has been getting the best of me lately but there's no way this house is going to be able to reach it's full potential if I don't start taking some risks. That being said, here's a brain dump of what I'd like to do in each room before 2014 rolls around...
We actually have a project in the works for this space so half of it has already been figured out. The other half is still a work in progress and probably won't be completed until June haha
Living Room //
Our couch needs to be replaced ASAP. We bought it off of Craigslist 4 years ago but it was manufactured in 2007 making it 6 years old. The cushions are completely shot and in some parts it feels like you're sitting on the springs.
I'd like to find a replacement that has a higher back and maybe some tufting. I was originally thinking of getting a sectional but now I'm thinking of getting two couches instead so we'll have more flexibility with furniture arrangements in the future. Saving for two couches is going to take some time but hopefully I can put some of my tax return towards the purchase!
We also need a new coffee table, some extra seating, artwork, and drapes.
Dining Room //
Rug. Rug. Rug. We need a rug! I'm going to be testing out the ikat rug that we have in our bedroom this week but if that doesn't work, I'm going on the hunt for a solution because it's about time that we check this off the list!
I also want to replace the builder basic chandelier that hangs above our table. It needs to be moved over about 2 feet though so I'll have to budget for both the new light and placement change.
I'm also thinking about replacing the large artwork with something else. Spoiler alert: this already happened! Check back next week to see what I did :)
Our kitchen is the most finished space in our house but there's still some things I'd like to do to it. For starters, I'd like to add a backsplash and some under cabinet lighting. I've also been thinking about painting our pantry's pocket door and maybe the interior of the pantry too! We also need bar stools and some new pendant lamps.
Powder Room //
Our powder room still feels unfinished to me. I haven't shown you any updates we've made since we painted in there but we did finally hang a mirror, switch out the art, and re-style the shelves. I'd still like to add some kind of molding to the bottom 1/3 of the room and maybe re-paint? Something about the gray bothers me...
Master Bedroom //
I'd like to get a new rug for the room. If I'm being honest, I've never been 100% in love with the ikat rug. It was expensive so I feel like I have to keep it but I'd like to move it to another room or try and Craigslist it if I can.
I'd also like to paint the room, add some artwork, find some seating (those chairs have been moved to our office), hang some drapes, get a ceiling fan, etc.
Master Bathroom //
I'd like to frame out the giant builder mirror or replace it with two smaller mirrors, replace the 80's Hollywood style light fixture, get a longer shower curtain, mount the shower curtain rod closer to the ceiling, replace the toilet paper roll holder and the towel bar. Maybe we'll go with robe hooks?
Master Closet //
I have big plans for this room but those big plans = big money so this might be an end of the year project when I've had some time to save up some.
Guest Bedroom //
You've never seen this room because there's nothing to see! It's currently where I store all of my extra artwork, mirrors, furniture, accessories, etc. It's like my own personal HomeGoods in there haha Anyway, I'd like to buy a bed and some night stands for the space but the room is sooo tiny that even a full sized one seems like it'd be too large! We're still figuring out a furniture placement but once we get that nailed down, furniture will soon follow :)
Guest Bathroom //
Aside from DIYing a pipe shower curtain rod and hanging some towels, we haven't touched this room. I'd like to paint it, stencil it, or wallpaper it, frame out the giant builder mirror, replace the light fixture, replace the toilet paper roll holder, replace the towel bar, add some art, etc.
Sigh, our lonely loft. I still don't know what to do with this room. Hopefully I'll figure something out before another year passes!
Laundry Room //
Our laundry room is small but it has a lot of empty wall space that need some artwork or paint. We also have a linen closet at the back of the room that needs to be organized and possibly painted as well.
My desk used to be in our loft but then I got Chester so it got relocated to our other extra bedroom making it our office. It can hardly be called an "office" though since the room only has my desk and my boyfriend's desk in there. We need to hang something on the walls, possibly paint them, find some other furniture, get a rug, change out the boob light fixture, hang some drapes, etc.
Our entire backyard and weird side alley yard have zero landscaping except for a layer of dirt and some large rocks that sit under where our scuppers are so the water doesn't pool up in place when it rains 3 days out of the year. When it does rain, it's a monsoon and it turns our yard into a disgusting mud pit. I'm *really* hoping that we can at least get some kind of ground cover over the dirt before monsoon season hits in July. Our front courtyard has crushed granite covering the ground and it looks really nice but I think it's going to be expensive to continue it into the alley and backyard. Other than that, I'd like to add a lot of desert plants and some nice outdoor furniture. Extending our patio is a thought I'm also pondering.
- All of the windows in our home (except for the one in our loft) need window treatments.
- I need more artwork.
- Our living room, loft, and master bedroom need ceiling fans. Yes they're a no-no in most designer's spaces but I live in Arizona and temperatures here skyrocket in the summer. So does my electric bill. Ceiling fans moving more air = (hopefully) lower electric bill = more money for furniture and projects :)
- More DIY projects!
I think that's it! Did you make it to the end?! If not, moral of the story is there's a lot I'd like to do in the next 12 months haha
Anything you'd like to see me do? Have any suggestions for any of the rooms above? I'm all ears!
