Patio Furniture Fail

Our new patio furniture was delivered yesterday. You may have seen me Instagram a sneak peek of it while we were in the process of unboxing it:

Despite the fact that the local delivery company just left the massive box out on the curb without so much as a knock on the door, a ring of the doorbell, or a telephone call to let us know they were there, it felt like Christmas morning when I got home and saw that my boyfriend had dragged the 232 pound box into our courtyard. Thank God he's strong haha

It took us 45 minutes to get everything out of the box and freed from its packaging materials:

Everything was packaged very well and nothing arrived damaged, which was good:

Unfortunately, the "good" stopped there. We ended up re-packaging everything back up about an hour later:

We're returning it. Bye pretty cushions :(

After we moved everything from our front courtyard back to our back patio, we started to assemble the easiest piece first - the coffee table.

We were aligning the silver base to the wicker top getting ready to screw it in place when we realized that the holes were off - by 1 1/2". My worst nightmare came true. I wish I would have taken a picture of it but I was in the process of trying not to burst into tears or curse at the top of my lungs.

We tried rotating the base around but that didn't help. We loosely screwed the one side in and then pulled the skewed base over so we could get one of the screws in the other side just to see if we could make it work. We tightened everything down, flipped the table over and noticed that it wobbled like a plate of Jello. I composed myself enough to call Target and start the return process. Everything went surprisingly smooth and I'll be issued a full refund in a few weeks.

I honestly don't know what to do now. I'm so disappointed and frustrated and just generally sad. I really wanted this furniture to work out. I felt like it was our first big "grown up" purchase for the house and it failed. I wanted to have dinner outside on our patio last night but instead we spent the evening trying to Tetris the pieces back into their giant box so the local delivery company can come back on Friday to pick everything up.

Ugh, sorry for being a Debbie Downer. I just wanted to fill you guys in on what happened so you're not wondering about the lack of updates in a few weeks. Let's talk about chairs for our loft tomorrow, okay? See you then :)

  2. Ughhhhhhhhh!!!!! What a major disappointment! I'm so sorry it didn't work out for you guys. It's bad enough that things didn't go together, but then having to re-pack it all...that had to be awful. I hope you find something even better for your home! :)

  3. Oh noooo that is too bad. Those cushions look so good. When we bought our set from Target a few years back, luckily we did not have to assemble anything. The cushions that come with the sets are not worth much though. I have washed our covers 3 or 4 times and the inner cushion is falling apart from being outside. I am buying new cushions this year and going for the real deal. The plastic wicker itself has held up nicely though. No fading.

  4. Melissa - It does but I guess it just wasn't meant to be!

    Gabbi - Yeah, it sucked! I'd hate to be the guy who has to figure out how to pack things for the first time cause I swear we spent almost an hour standing around scratching our heads trying to make it all fit. We did it though!

    Katja - It's ok! Good to know about the cushions! I hope your new ones are amazing :) Also good to know that the wicker hasn't faded yet. That was one of our concerns since the sun can fade almost anything out here!

  5. Such a bummer Caitlin!!! I know how excited you were. Here's to hoping that you find something better! Did you consider asking them to send you a new set? Maybe it was just a fluke that you got a bad one.

  6. The guy I spoke to in customer service gave us two options: send us a new set or give us a full refund. I opted for the full refund because I figured that all of the sets would have the same issue. I could be wrong but I didn't want to chance anything. We'll start looking again in a few months when the memory of this set has faded away. If we wait long enough, maybe we can score a really good end-of-summer deal on a set! :)

  7. Booo. No one likes furniture disappointments. At least the return process has gone somewhat smoothly so far. Fingers crossed you find a new set soon!

  8. Ugh! This is so disappointing. We had wooden Ikea furniture in Southern California for a few years that held up really well despite all the hot sun - from the Appalaro series. Don't know if you're anywhere near an Ikea, but that might be an option. You still have to build everything, but at least they seem to be able to line the holes up correctly! Sarah

  10. Ugh I HATE that. You do all the work of unpackaging and then THAT. The worst thing is having to go through the trouble of returning it. I am so with you on how terrible that is. I hope you find something that works even better!

  11. That a bummer. We had problem with furniture we ordered from Target some 6 years ago. They are surprisingly easy to deal with returns. It will come together soon!
