Interior Door Color Choices

I'm in the process of updating the back of our front door right now and it's taking much longer than I expected so let's talk color today!

Well, let me back up a second. For those of you that are new here, our foyer (where the back of our front door is located) looks like this:

Sort of, it's been updated since these photos were taken but the bench + art remain:

After my project is finished, I plan on painting the back of the door along with our other interior doors (eventually).

Here are the colors I'm contemplating:

In case you're wondering, those aren't actual paint colors shown above (I just chose colors I liked in Photoshop) so I can't give you paint color names because there are none.

I've already chosen a color in my head but I'd like to get your opinion on my choices and to see if there's a color you think would look good that I haven't thought of!

Keep in mind that the front of our door is orange:

Psst: remind me to give you a patio update, it no longer looks like this!

This color cannot be changed per our HOA's rules and regulations. That being said, do you think it'll look odd if one side of the door is one color (orange) and the other is another (one of the choices above)?

Here's a larger version of the gray so you can see how it looks with the artwork:

The navy:

And finally the black:

What do you think of the choices? Which one is your favorite? Have another suggestion? Here's all 3 so you don't have to scroll back up :)

  1. I am personally leaning toward a navy door, although all would make lovely choices, I think. :)

  2. At first my thought was black or even gray, but I must say that navy is my favorite. Everyone is doing black or dark gray interior doors and the navy is still dark, but much more unexpected and less like Halloween with the orange exterior and black or gray interior.

  3. Navy! The black looks too harsh and the gray is fine. But I think the navy has a certain warmth to it! Good luck!

  4. I agree with everyone else, the navy is by far the best. I don't think it would look weird to have the front and the back of the door two different colors. The outside of our front door is bright yellow and the back is navy.

  6. Two colors front/back is fine and good. I was torn between the black and navy but I see everyone here saying navy. Personally, I like the black, but for some reason I had a feeling you'd like, and go with, the navy...which I like just about as much. As one said, its more "unexpected".

  7. i'm thinking navy.

what's the difference between having an orange exterior/and white interior, versus orange exterior and a dark color interior, nothing! it's still 2 different colors! so i wouldn't worry about it. I've actually been thinking about painting our interior door -- i have to get it past the husband! ;)

  8. Black would be the more neutral choice I think but I loved the navy!

  9. I really love the navy, but given the large frame in the hall right beside it, I think i'd be inclined to go with the dark grey.

  14. I am probably the newest of new here and don't know how it would flow with the rest of your design plan for your home. Just looking at this space I am head over heals for the navy. It softens the stark-ness (is that a word) of the white edges and compliments the art. The grey and black seem to make it seem like a dark hole.

  15. I love the navy because it has a modern feel, but it's a bit different. I have a black door on the front and back door interiors and I love it, too. But, I just feel like your style is cooler than that - hahaha, cooler than me. ;)

  17. I'm loving the gray and the navy which is unusual since I typically love black. This is crazy though as we will soon be replacing our door and I've been stuck on the color for inside. I want white but it's impossible with our dog who always puts his feet on the door. Now I'm thinking of gray-- thanks for the photoshop and inspiration!

  18. I think I have to say Navy! Can't wait to see how it turns out!

  19. I really like the gray but it is the safer choice. I'm voting the navy because it's surprisingly cute!

  20. Two colors if fine but wouldnt it be a fun touch of color to bring some shade of that orange into the interior. I do think it would work with your artwork and does not have to be the exact shade, I would go a bit darker and moodier.

If not then black is always my choice...graphic and sophisticated like the rest of your home.

  21. Navy with black in second place.

  22. Navy is my number one choice- so pretty and unexpected! I love the crispness of black. Gray seems like the safe choice. No matter what you choose, you can't go wrong.

  23. Navy is my fave too. However I think gray would look great as well.
And no, I don't think it is weird to paint the two sides of the door different colors! When do you ever see the two at the same time?

  24. Oooooh NAVY all the way! I don't think it would be weird at all with both sides of the door painted. Do it! Do it!

  25. You know I love the black for the door. The navy is a great option too. I feel like everything I've been liking lately is either black or navy, so unless you picked gray I'm going to say you can't go wrong! ;) Even if you picked gray it would still look good.

I hate that HOA rule. Ugh. Don't know know who you are!?!
