I haven't been thrifting in a long time since thrift stores are really hit or miss here and I tend to give up on the "sport" for a while after I strike out a few times. That being said, I had some luck last night and I thought I'd share what I got before most of it gets a makeover!

The first thing I spotted was this chunky wood slice bowl…thing:

It was only $5!

I have no idea what that little nub in the center is, do you?

I plan on removing it during it's makeover but right now it almost looks like it'd hold golf tees and maybe golf balls would sit around the edges? Who knows haha

UPDATE: Thanks to readers Leslie and Brigitte (and my mom) for letting me know that the bowl is actually a nut bowl! Apparently the nutcracker sits in the larger holes and curved metal picks sit in the smaller ones (so you can pick open stubborn shells) while nuts fill the rest of the bowl. Pretty cool!

I spotted this little gold tea light holder a few aisles away from the chunky wood slice bowl:

It was $2!

I didn't really need it but I liked the star cut outs and thought it would look cute in some future holiday vignettes :)

The last thing(s) we left with were a few wall frames:

All of them were $1 except for the gold frame which was $2:

I'm debating on whether or not I want to do anything to them since I kind of like the mix of their current finishes. We'll see!

We also got a standing frame:

The acrylic/plastic part swings back and forth which is different! I'm not a fan of the light colored wooden base so I might paint it (hot pink? army green?) or sand it down and stain it a little darker. I also plan on choosing some art that's smaller than the piece of acrylic/plastic and mounting it in the center so it'll be a swinging floating frame!

Oh and it was $2 which I thought was a total steal!

Total spent? $15.13 including tax! Maybe I should go thrifting more often...

Have you been thrifting lately? What have you found?

  2. My guess on the wood...thingy, lol, is that is a frog. A "vase" with a built-in frog. A VERY short, stumpy (no pun intended) vase. To get ANY kind of height for an arrangement in it, it would NEED some sort of frog placed inside it to hold up the flowers, foliage, whatever.

After seeing some of the things you come home with from "thrifting" and I just want to say you have an open invitation to just come over and rummage through all my "stuff" in my basement, lol. Seriously, I can't tell you how much stuff like that I've been slowly, but surely, taking to Salvation Army or Goodwill over the years. I can only hope someone like you "finds" them and makes a cute home with them like you do! ;)

    1. That's a good guess Scotty! Some readers chimed in and said that it's actually a nut bowl! The nutcracker sits in the larger holes and curved metal picks sit in the smaller ones (so you can pick open stubborn shells) while nuts fill the rest of the bowl. Pretty cool!

Rummaging through your stuff sounds like a good time! :)

  6. I agree with Scotty that it's some sort of vase thing. I'd be tempted to shove some oasis into it and do a really low arrangement - of just daisies or gerbers or something. Great finds

  7. The wood bowl is actually a nut bowl. This pedestal in the center holds the metal nutcrackers upright, then you can fill it with nuts. We've had them in my family for years, it never occurred to me that other folks wouldn't know what they are! :)

    1. I really should go more since the turnover is so high and you never know what you might find but those strike out trips are so discouraging haha

  11. I'm very excited to see what you do with the bowl and the standing frame. I have a love/hate relationship with thrift stores. It's almost always a miss around here which is why I stick with antique stores and flea markets. They are hit and miss too, but you're much more likely to find something even if you can't justify the price you at least found something cool.

  16. I thought the bowl was an ash tray for a minute, but that doesn't make much sense. Nut ball = makes much more sense :) Great finds!
