Living Room Couch Options

Our living room couch broke last weekend. My boyfriend kneeled on it when he was going to stand up and we heard a loud pop. We haven't checked it out yet but we think one of the springs snapped because now when you sit on the one side, you sink down much further than when you sit on the other side.

I'm not upset about it though because we've needed to/wanted to replace it for a couple of years now. We got it off of Craigslist from a couple of college kids back in 2009 but it was manufactured in 2007 so it's 6 years old.

It was in good condition when we bought it but now the cushions are squished down to nothing and aside from the broken spring issue, it feels like you're sitting on the frame. I'm pretty sure those kids had dance parties on it haha

Anyway, I've been searching for couches for a while now and here's what I'm considering from the big box stores:

Couch #1
Henry Sofa | West Elm

I really love the clean lines of West Elm's Henry sofa. The dove gray quick ship option was 20% off over the weekend making it $799 for the 86" sofa. I contemplated buying it but I really don't want another gray couch so I'm considering their ink blue option.

Our current couch has removable slip covers that we wash on a weekly basis but I wear dark colored jeans and even though I've washed them 100's of times, the ink STILL rubs off onto the cushions so they always have a blue hue. A navy couch might make the blue hue less visible.

Couch #2
Garrison Sofa | Home Decorators

I would love another leather couch but I'm afraid our 3 dogs would destroy it. They're great around Chester and know they're not allowed on it but that's probably because we don't spend a lot of time in our loft. There is a linen option but I think my jeans would have an issue with the lighter linen color. I do love the line of the arms and the nailhead trim though!

Couch #3
Kinsley Sofa | La-Z-Boy

La-Z-Boy's Kinsley sofa is really nice in person and is pretty comfortable too! I love the nailhead trim and multiple fabric options there is to choose from. The only downside is that the interior seat width is just over 5 1/2' which means my 5' 9" self wouldn't be able to lay down and take a nap or watch a movie. Womp, womp.

Couch #4
Pauline Sofa | Z Gallerie

This couch is incredibly comfortable and deeper (40") than most I've looked at. You can't see it in the image above but the nailhead trim wraps around to the sides of the couch. It's upholstered in 100% Polyester microfiber which was super soft when we visited the sofa in store but I don't know how well microfiber cleans up/holds up.

There's always IKEA and Craigslist but I'd like to imitate a grown up and invest in a decent couch since the last two we've had (IKEA and Craigslist ones) have fallen apart. Of course I won't be buying anything for a while since it's the holidays and all but it's fun to look (and save)! Kind of haha

What kind of couch do you have? Any tips on fabric choices?

  1. I loveeeee couch #1.

I would never get a leather couch unless it wasn't going to be used. If you are anything like me, I love to lounge around in my living room....daily. If you get a leather couch, it will wear and fade (especially near any sunlight).

  7. I have to say blue. I've wanted one for a while. And I also agree with Gabbi about microfiber cleaning up really well.
I have the same issue with my Jeans and my car seat :(

  8. I actually really like having our leather couch with the dogs....ours is hand me down from my mom, so it was a good way to try it out and see....but, yeah--fur doesn't cling to it, and it doesn't absorb doggie stink. Even the cats leave it alone. I'm leaning toward another leather one for the den (I really like the navy blue leather chesterfield from Home Decorators) when we can finally replace the brown monstrosity that's in there now

  9. We have an old leather sectional and our dogs have been all over it. We do keep blankets on it for them to lay on, but mostly for their own comfort than trying to cover it up. And unless you have a digger or nester, it wears really well with the dogs. But I think the dark blue COLOR would look really nice in your place. Some leather couches come in a myriad of color options...perhaps a dark blue leather couch????

  10. I think #3 would look amazing. I have a couch from Z Gallerie very similar to #4 and the same color. It is a great couch but my dogs and cats have murdered it. Next time I will get a more durable fabric in a color that doesnt show so much "love".

  11. YAYAYAYAYA! Everyone who knows me knows I'm such a furniture whore. Always buying new things every year it seems... honestly, I've always been pretty happy with things from Home Decorators. Especially after I learned they were a company owned by Home Depot. I'm really excited to see what you end up going with :)

  12. Yay! Shopping for furniture is so exciting! Love the choices you've come up with. My favourites are #1 & 2. We've been thinking of getting leather for our next couch. I think it would be great for cleaning, but I'm a little hesitant with the dog too.

  13. I think couch buying is horribly stressful. It's such a big decision. First world problems

I strongly recommend buying a quality couch. Our living room set probably costs more than every other piece of furniture in our house combined. I would totally do it again. We got ours from Ethan Allen and they have held up so well. Very pleased.

And buy that Henry sofa because I kind of love it.

  14. I love the first couch! I do have a penchant for leather couches but the inky blue looks just so luxurious. Haha, I feel the same about couches. We bought ours on CL and I wonder when I'm going to become an adult and actually invest in one. Maybe when the little ones grow up...

  18. We have the Clare sofa from Macy's (http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/clare-fabric-sofa-82w-x-37d-x-37h?ID=672571&CategoryID=29391&LinkType=PDPZ1). I love the shape but hate the fabric - tone and texture. I love the west elm couch especially in blue. It seems to really fit your style and would look great with what you currently have.

I would love to buy a unique sofa on craigslist and have it reupholstered, but it's just so insanely expensive. I don't think I could DIY upholstering an entire couch. Seems like too big of a risk since you'd been in hundreds of dollars for the fabric alone.

  19. Choosing the right furniture is probably the most important decision you'll take for your interiors. A leather sofa recliner can add style and elegant to your home. Before buying a best recliner you should check the best recliner reviews.
